# Are personalized vitamins worth the cost?

By Dr. Andrew Brandeis, ND · 8 min read

You can pick up a multivitamin at any drugstore for $8. So why would anyone pay 5–10× more for a personalized supplement pack? The honest answer: most people _shouldn't_. But for the specific subset of people personalized vitamins are built for, the math works out surprisingly well.

## The short answer

Personalized vitamins are worth it when three things are true: (1) you actually have goals or gaps a generic multi can't address, (2) the formulation comes from a clinician, not a quiz that maps you to a stock SKU, and (3) the format makes you actually take them every day. If any of those is missing, you're paying for marketing.

## Where store-bought multis fall short

A drugstore multivitamin is built for an imaginary "average adult." It bundles 20–30 ingredients at conservative doses so it's safe for everyone — which means it's optimized for no one. A few specific failure modes:

- · **Under-dosing.** Most contain 400–800 IU of vitamin D — fine for preventing rickets, far below what the research uses for energy, mood, or immune outcomes (typically 2,000–5,000 IU).
- · **Cheap forms.** Folic acid instead of methylfolate, magnesium oxide instead of glycinate, cyanocobalamin instead of methyl-B12. Cheaper to manufacture, harder for many people to absorb.
- · **Wrong stack for your goal.** A "Women's Multi" can't know whether you're training for a marathon, recovering from pregnancy, or struggling with sleep.
- · **Compliance.** A jumble of bottles on the counter is the #1 reason people stop. Studies on supplement adherence consistently show single-serve packaging beats bottles by a wide margin.

## What "personalized" should actually mean

The personalized vitamin category is crowded, and not all of it is honest. Some brands map a 10-question quiz to one of a dozen pre-built packs and call it "personalization." That's marketing, not formulation. Real personalization has three signals worth looking for:

Formulated by a clinician

An actual ND, MD, or PharmD reviewing your stack — not a quiz engine.

Third-party tested

Every ingredient verified for identity, potency, and contaminants by an independent lab.

Adjustable over time

Your goals change. The stack should change with them — not lock you into one SKU forever.

Transparent sourcing

The brand will tell you the form (e.g. methylfolate vs. folic acid) and dose, on the package.

## The price math

A personalized 28-day pack typically runs $60–$100/mo. A drugstore multi plus three or four targeted bottles (D3, magnesium, omega-3, a probiotic) lands at $40–$70/mo once you actually buy clinical-grade versions of each. The personalized pack carries a ~$20/mo premium for the formulation work, the single-serve packaging, and the third-party testing. Whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on whether you'd actually take the four-bottle version every day. Most people don't.

## How Perfect Packs is built

For full disclosure: Perfect Packs is our take on this. An AI concierge asks about your goals, constraints, and lifestyle, then builds a stack from the OK Capsule clinical-grade catalog. Every recommendation is bounded by formulation rules Dr. Andrew Brandeis, ND wrote — so the AI can't suggest a stack that's redundant, contraindicated, or over the upper limit for any nutrient. Each day arrives in a single-serve sachet. No bottles, no counting, and you can re-chat with the concierge any time your goals shift.

## The honest bottom line

If you're already disciplined enough to take 4 bottles of clinical-grade supplements every day, you don't need personalized vitamins — you need a Costco run. If you're not, the ~$20/mo premium for a clinician-formulated, third-party tested, single-serve pack probably pays for itself in adherence alone. Personalized vitamins aren't magic. They're just the only format most people will actually stick with.
